The next stop on our trip was the town of Forks. While the main reason for our stay was its proximity to the northwest beaches, we couldn't ignore the fact that Forks was heavily featured in the Twilight books. To prepare, Vivian and I read the first Twilight book. Neither of us enjoyed it, and despite being part of the book's core audience, Vivian took offense at all the Twilight references around town. The goal of our visit was beaches, not vampires, so we headed to the ocean to see Rialto Beach. Once again, Jamie and I had done a backpacking trip there back in 2000. Despite the overcast weather, the kids really enjoyed the beach. It was low tide, so there were many tide pools to explore. We hiked a bit up the shore to see Hole in the Wall, which is exactly what it sounds like: a hole in a sea cliff carved out by the ocean. While we were there, we witnessed a helicopter rescue of someone who had somehow gotten stuck at the top of the cliff.
