We had intended to include camping at Kalaloch as part of our Olympic trip, but the reservation system had recently become very competitive, and I was unable to reserve a site despite trying for different days using more than one reservation account. So this time we were only daytime visitors.
On the way, we stopped at the picturesque Ruby Beach. Unlike the other beaches we had seen earlier in the trip, it was sunny here, though the tide was in, so there were no tide-pooling opportunities. While there, we took our classic “kids on a log” picture.
From Ruby Beach we continued to Kalaloch, reminisced about our favorite (but booked) site, and wandered down to the shoreline. Compared to most Olympic coast spots, Kalaloch feels like a typical sandy beach—but looks can be deceiving, as the water is frigid and the weather is often cold. We also checked out the nearby Tree of Life, which is literally hanging in there, though it may not have many years left.
